October Volatility is Hitting U.S. Stocks Again

Historically, October is the most volatile month for the U.S. stock market, with average volatility that is 34% higher than the other 11 months. That trend dates back to 1945, and is playing out again.

Last week, the S&P 500 experienced its worst day since September 6, with a significant selloff on Tuesday. The VIX, a measure of market volatility, spiked to 20.7, its highest intraday level since September 11.
